Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave.
One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.
This book was wonderfully written with a great-paced story line. I really like the main character, Tana, and found her personality to be very believable. Her mistakes, rushing headlong into precarious situations, her choices, and so much more made her easy to relate to. (For me, relating to at least one character — main or supporting — is important.) I can easily see how it may get a little (sometimes a lot) frustrating that she is incredibly stubborn, but it is better than me being able to guess exactly what she is going to do every time and her being the ultimate hero. The supporting characters were all very unique with interesting and varying personalities that added well to the overall story. The quirkiness of Gavriel made the book for me; he was hands down my favorite character! You never knew quite what you were going to get with him. Definitely a fun read and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy young adult books.
